About Ucan !
The Upper Manhattan
Council Assisting Neighbors, Inc. (Ucan), is a community-based organization committed to the creation and preservation of safe affordable housing, economic empowerment and resources, by assisting in the empowerment of northern Manhattan neighbors, community based groups and associations.
This goal is accomplished by working with individual
tenants (assisting with tenant advocacy), block and
tenant associations (emerging as well as established),
other community-based institutions, and promoting
low-income housing development/preservation.
Additionally, Ucan will work to empower communities by
supporting holistic neighborhood prevention
initiatives.
To accomplish this mission during the calendar years of 1999-2005 and the future Ucan will coordinate a series of on-going activities, which will
include, but are not limited to:
Tenant counseling. Assist tenants in petitioning their landlords
for needed repairs.

advocating education and personal development through a holistic
approach.
By pursuing these objectives, Ucan is sure to make significant contributions
to the struggle against the increasing housing problems in the Northern
Manhattan Community.
All of UCAN's Programs promote and advocate for the awareness and
self-management through education and prevention. By working with
individual tenants, block and tenant associations and community-based
institutions.
By helping people empower themselves we seek to find
solutions where recently all that could be found were
complaints. Consequently, we hope to receive the
support of all institutions and personalities
concerned about solving the housing problems of our
community as well as education and economic needs that exist.
